Breaking Records. Saving Lives.
In February 2021, Andrew Buchanan will be 1 of 40 caring and courageous hockey players who will strap on their skates to challenge the Guinness World Record by playing in the 7th edition of the World’s Longest Hockey Game – all while making a difference for cancer patients right here in Alberta.
They will be playing hockey for 251 hours straight – in Alberta’s blistering cold – with the goal of raising $1,500,000 in support of the Cure Cancer Foundation. All funds raised through the 2021 World’s Longest Hockey Game will go entirely towards supporting a clinical study in lymphoma and solid tumor patients who are enrolled in Edmonton. In particular, donations will be used to cover the cost for the PCLX-001 drug, examinations, patient care, and ongoing analysis of how well the drug is working. This is crucial in revealing the future this therapy will have in fighting cancer – in saving lives – right here in Edmonton, and around the world.
Andrew is playing in support of all First Responders across the nation who are affected by cancer. This includes friends, family, and patients who they see struggle every day with this disease. Over the past 10 years out of 568 work-related deaths in Canada, 483, or 85%, were attributed to occupational cancers. Braving the cold will not even be comparable to the pain and suffering caused by cancer. This groundbreaking drug could potentially help eliminate the many types of cancers that are killing firefighters. Cancer is becoming so common in their profession that we already have a long list of presumptive cancers we may face during our careers. Let’s change these statistics!
To all the children at the Cross Cancer Institute battling cancer, this is also for you. All of you are so courageous, amazing, and strong little warriors. You give Andrew the strength and determination to play in this event to help cure cancer!!
