Suspect dies after crashing stolen SUV into tree on residential Edmonton street

One man is dead and another in hospital after a stolen SUV being pursued by its owner crashed into a tree in Edmonton's Alberta Avenue area Thursday morning. Mason DePatie reports.

A man died Thursday morning after crashing a car into a tree on a residential street in Edmonton, police said.

The Edmonton Police Service said two men are suspected of stealing a 2010 Toyota RAV4 from a garage near 125 Avenue and 81 Street. The owner of the vehicle happened to spot it driving by and followed the suspects in another car while calling 911, police said.

According to police, the driver lost control of the vehicle and it hit a tree on 120 Avenue near 87 Street around 5:30 a.m. The driver was killed in the crash, police said.

The 34-year-old passenger is in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

The area was closed for a few hours while police investigated the crash.

Roxanne Hooper, who has lived on the street for more than eight years, said drivers often race up and down her street.

“It was inevitable,” she said.

“They treat (the road) like it’s a race track.”
