“We all grew up on nineties country and that’s what to me this song is. I think it’s special because it’s from the first guitar lick, it takes you right back to hearing the original from Jo Dee Messina.”

She Had Me At Heads Carolina pays tribute and samples Jo Dee Messina’s 1996 #2 hit Heads Carolina, Tails California.

Carolina is #1 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart in the USA and Canada.
“I continue to be blown away and humbled by the response to this song. I knew it was a special song when we wrote it and I knew that it could be a big song, but to now see it happening because of the support of fans and radio has just meant so much to me. Thank you.”

“She Had Me At Heads Carolina is just about a night out with the guys, having fun, walking in a bar, not knowing it’s karaoke night and turns out there’s a group of girls having a good time. They go and turn in one of their friend’s names next thing you know, she’s up there on karaoke singing Heads Carolina, Tails California by Jo Dee Messina, and that’s the whole story behind the twist on the song.”

She Had Me At Heads Carolina is the third single from Cole’s fourth album, Stereotype.

It was written by Cole Swindell, Ashley Gorley, Jesse Frasure and Thomas Rhett.

Mark D. Sanders and Tim Nichols also received credit as the original writers of Heads Carolina, Tails California.

“I knew when we started writing this song, if we got it right, it could do big things. I never could have imagined this, though. Watching the fans react to this one has motivated me even more to keep raising the bar and challenging myself. This is one of the most fun songs I have ever been a part of, hands down.”

“I was kind of taken aback that they chose Heads Carolina as the song. Out of any song they could have chosen from that time, the fact that they chose it was an honor. I heard about She Had Me at Heads Carolina from the original writers of Heads Carolina, Tails California. They let me know the song was written and sent me a copy of it. The success of the song makes me happy for Cole. I think that Tim Nichols and Mark D. Sanders put together a timeless theme and melody. We know they wrote something timeless because at our shows today, even before the release of Cole Swindell’s single, Heads Carolina, as well as many of our other songs, has had a huge response that hasn’t died down over the years. When I look at the success that it has, it brings me joy because I always believed that the song was timeless.”

Cole Swindell is currently on his Back Down To The Bar Tour.

When Cole Swindell came to Nashville, one of his first jobs was working at Luke Bryan’s merch table.

Three years of selling merchandise for Luke led to his successful career and an appearance at Luke Bryan’s Crash My Playa in 2023.

The video for She Had Me At Heads Carolina was directed by Spidey Smith and filmed at a downtown Nashville bar in the legendary Printer’s Alley.

In the video, a man walks into a bar on karaoke night and instantly falls for a woman singing the Jo Dee Messina hit Heads Carolina, Tails California.

Jo Dee Messina makes a cameo appearance in the video as the bartender.

“I was so excited when I got the chance to talk to Jo Dee and let her know that I’ve been a fan of hers for a long time. Now I to get to call her a friend. We wouldn’t have this song without her.”

“Cole has a genuine love and respect for country music and has mastered the art of writing and singing a great song. There’s a significant resurgence in the popularity of 90’s country and Cole and his co-writers tapped into that nostalgia perfectly. Cole’s passion, paired with this iconic hit by Messina, struck an instant chord with his fans.” Kristen Williams Warner Music Nashville SVP/Radio
