Carly Pearce And Ashley McBryde
BillboardNever Wanted To Be That Girl was written by Carly, Ashley and Shane McAnally. It’s the second single from Pearce’s third album, 29: Written in Stone.
“When Ashley McBryde and I were writing Never Wanted To Be That Girl with Shane McAnally, we were just in the moment, thinking about the women we want to be and the way that’s not always how life and love turn out. But nobody ever paused long enough to think about having a #1 record or winning an Academy of Country Music Award.
We wanted to shake off an honest mistake, and now here we are with the #1 song at Country radio and the ACM trophy for Music Event of the Year. Sometimes out of something bad comes something good.
Thank you to everyone who plays Country music, our fans, our record labels, management teams, agents, our bands and everyone in between. Ashley, I am so proud to call you my friend, my sister and I will forever be grateful for this song bringing us together. Gonna go cry for the 100th time!”
Thank you to every single person who was a part of this project and helped get it to #1 on both the @MediabaseCharts and @billboardcharts! I couldn’t imagine going on this journey with anyone else, @AshleyMcBryde. WE DID IT 😭🤍 https://t.co/Jk2tt3dGiP pic.twitter.com/OI1xxLpfU2

“Reba and Linda, Miranda and Elle now Ashley and me. There’s something about two girls talking or singing that just hits home. And the fact that we’re not just singing it, but also that we wrote it, that’s the icing on the cake. The only thing that makes this better is seeing my friend Ashley getting her first #1. Now that is something to celebrate.”
WE DID IT!!! “NEVER WANTED TO BE THAT GIRL” IS OFFICIALLY THE NUMBER 1 SONG ON COUNTRY RADIO! 🥲♥️ @AshleyMcBryde pic.twitter.com/Y8i2owgv0t

“Carly, Shane and I were focused on writing a song we loved that day. We were three individuals unafraid of being honest. That was our compass. Now here we are with a #1 song at country radio to remind us of how rewarding honesty can be.”
First times only happen once.
I’ll always remember I was in Leeds, England when I got the news. I’ll always love that @carlypearce and I got to ride this rocket of a song together. pic.twitter.com/r7CdRyDaAA— Ashley McBryde (@AshleyMcBryde) May 9, 2022
Carly and Ashley won an Academy of Country Music Award, Music Event of the Year, for Never Wanted To Be That Girl.
“Just thinking about how this song even came to be: I had an idea to have Ashley on a song and she was on board. And just to see what it’s done and the stories that we’ve heard, and to be two women to get a #1, it’s Ashley’s first, which I think is really awesome, and I’m so happy for her. And this is the kind of music that I want to write and I want to sing, and to see it do what it’s done at radio makes me really proud.”
